I grew up in a small town in the Mississippi Delta and was introduced to art at a very young age. One of my earliest memories of exposure to the fine arts was via a volunteer from the Women's Auxiliary coming to my fifth grade class and introducing us to reproductions of Picasso's "Three Musicians" and other masterpieces. Needless to say, I was entranced and have pursued art in one form or another ever since. I'm fairly certain that the various art projects I completed helped me to survive school, ensured that I successfully completed all of my courses and help me to graduate on time!
I became seriously interested in clay about 15 years ago when I started taking classes at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. While there, I studied hand-building, wheel-throwing and figure-sculpting every semester for about eight years. For at least a couple of semesters, I also worked as a type of assistant and was responsible for mixing glazes and loading and firing the kilns, etc. I have been fortunate to have studied under several notable ceramic artists throughout the southeast including Debra Fritts, Lisa Clague, Martin Dawe, Glenn Dair, Bill Nixon, and Diane Kempler. Prior to working in clay, my first venture into the arts focused on drawing and painting. I completed the equivalent of a minor in drawing and painting at Georgia State University.
A few years back, I was represented by the Ardavin Gallery in Buckhead (which later became the Gardner Gallery). As a member of the Callanwolde Pottery Guild, I have shown my work at various festivals and ceramics shows in Atlanta. For the past several years I've continued taking sculpture workshops and have been working in my studio in Ormewood Park, investing time and energy exploring the various themes that are of interest to me.
